Orphans are a worldwide crisis. Millions of children every year are orphaned by the death of one or both parents. HIV/AIDS is quickly becoming a primary cause of parental death, as well as natural disasters, wars and other armed conflicts, and economic and social processes. More than 18 million children are projected to be orphaned due to AIDS by 2010 in sub-Saharan Africa alone, which represents 36.8 percent of the total number of orphans world-wide due to all causes.
